Weekend Tastings: Fresh Spring Selections

Please join me this Friday, May 8th, from 3 pm to 6 pm, or Saturday, May 9th, from 1 pm to 4 pm, and taste the following fresh biodynamic/organically grown wines from Spain and France.

 In Vino Veritas! Dirk

2024 Galerna Garnacha, Spain – Made from organically grown Garnacha grapes, this wine offers notes of brambleberries, red cherries, potpourri, and geraniums. Easy-drinking, medium-bodied and fresh, with lightly grainy tannins and a dry yet fruity finish. $13.00

2025 Galerna Verdejo, Spain – Made from organically grown Verdejo grapes, this wine starts with pear aromas and light tropical fruit notes. This finish is mouth-watering and zesty fresh! $13.00

Cremant d’Alsace Brut, France – This cuvée is composed mostly of Pinot Blanc, with a small amount of Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. The wine is made in the Traditional Method, like Champagne, resulting in a beautiful sparkling wine with notes of honeysuckle and ripe peach that leap from the glass with hints of orange blossom and subtle biscuit notes on the creamy, refreshing finish. $22.00

Vignoble Anne Collard Shi Fu Mi Rouge, France – Made from a blend of biodynamically grown Grenache, Marselan, and Mourvèdre, this easy-drinking red wine offers juicy dark-fruit notes of damson plum and blood orange, with a hint of lilac. It has a lively finish with sassy tannins! $17.00

Founded in 1971, Husch is the oldest winery in the picturesque Anderson Valley. The vineyards comprise some of the earliest varietal plantings on the valley floor. In 1967, Tony and Gretchen Husch bought the 60-acre Nunn ranch between Philo and Navarro on Highway 128. The land was well known for growing apples and grains. They soon planted eight acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Gewurztraminer grapes on the property’s cool slopes. The plantings sweep down towards the pristine Navarro River. The first official crush was in the fall of 1971.

In 1979, Hugo Oswald Jr. bought the 6,000-case Husch Winery from the Husch family. The Oswald family had been growing pears in the Santa Clara Valley, but as the area expanded, they sold the land and headed for the southern tip of Mendocino County. Today, Husch Vineyards remains owned and operated by the 3rd Generation of the Oswald family: Zac Robinson and Amanda Robinson Holstine. Winemaking is under the direction of Brad Holstine (Amanda’s husband). Al White, in charge of all viticulture operations, has been with Husch since 1974. Through the years, Husch has modernized and expanded, but it has never lost its initial rustic charm or reputation for great wines.
